William H. Emling’s career in steel began at Case Institute of Technology, where he followed in his uncle’s footsteps and graduated with a B.S. in Metallurgical & Materials Science Engineering in 1979. Upon graduation, Emling joined National Steel in Granite City, Illinois, as a metallurgical engineer. He worked shifts as a turn foreman and participated in the startup of the number one caster, but later, when his position required him to spend most of his time behind a desk, he struggled to find fulfillment. After moving to Jones & Laughlin Steel (LTV Steel) in Pittsburgh, where he worked from 1981 to 1999, Emling held several positions of increasing responsibility, spanning research and development to operations management. After graduate business school, in 1999, Emling joined Acutus Gladwin (subsequently acquired by SMS group) as Vice President of Maintenance Technology, making the unique transition from working as a steel producer to being a supplier, and giving his people skills a chance to shine. Emling became Vice President and Plant Manager of the Oil City Division in 2003, and Vice President of Sales and Business Development for the Metallurgy Division at SMS in 2006. Emling has also remained heavily involved in member societies, holding various prestigious positions, including Chairman of the ISS Steelmaking Committee, Chairman of the Continuous Casting Technology Committee, AIST Board Member, and Foundation Trustee. Through it all, what has made Emling stand apart is his desire to use his influence to help others. Whether acting as a leader or simply being a friend, Emling aims to help his colleagues be their best. Emling is exceptionally devoted to young engineers, finding exciting ways to boost their careers and gain footing in the industry.
