James T. Staley received his B.S. and M.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from Drexel University. Beginning in 1963 he advanced through a number of research and development assignments at Alcoa Laboratories culminating in the present director level position of Corporate Consultant, High-Strength Alloys. Most of Dr. Staley's career has been devoted to developing aluminum alloy products and processes for the aerospace industry. He currently is responsible for the direction of research in that area. He also serves as Alcoa Laboratories' coordinator for physical metallurgy activities at universities.

Dr. Staley has authored more than 30 publications on physical metallurgy, development of aluminum alloys and processes, and development of personal computer software for education in Materials Science. He has co-authored a course on physical metallurgy of aluminum which was presented nationally. He holds five patents on alloys and processes for the aerospace industry.

A member and Fellow of ASM International, Dr. Staley is also a member of TMS and past chairman of the Structural Materials Committee. He is a co-winner of three IR-100 awards from Industrial Research magazine. He was awarded Alcoa's highest technical award, the Francis Frary Award, for outstanding individual contribution to Alcoa's technology, and Alcoa's highest team award, the Arthur Vining Davis Award, for technical excellence.
