David J. Lloyd (TMS)

AIME James Douglas Gold Medal* in
2003

"For outstanding research and contributions in physical metallurgy of aluminum alloys on ultra-fine grained alloys, metastable alloys, composite materials, and high strength automotive aluminum alloys."

David J. Lloyd obtained his PhD from the University of Wales in 1968, and after postdoctoral work at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario and at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, joined Alcan at its Kingston, Ontario Research Center in 1974. Initially working in the area of rapid solidification and metastable alloys, he subsequently developed Alcan's alloy research on continuously cast alloys, AI-Li alloys and metal matrix composites. The continuous casting research developed optimum alloys for Alcan's belt casting process and the metal matrix composite work developed the DURALCAN range of metal matrix composites. For the last ten years as principal scientist he has had global responsibility for various aspects of Alcan's materials research, and has spent extended periods of time at Alcan's overseas operations. Dr. Lloyd has over 150 publications and many patents in the broad range of aluminum processing, fabrication and deformation behavior. He is a Fellow of the American Society for Metals and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, a member of the scientific advisory boards of several universities and government agencies in Canada and the US, and a member of the editorial boards of several scientific journals.
