Charles R. Kuzell

AIME James Douglas Gold Medal* in

"For outstanding contributions to nonferrous metallurgy, particularly in the field of copper smelting; for inspiring and guiding young engineers; and for notable service to his professional society."

Charles R. Kuzell was born in 1889 in Cleveland. He was graduated from Case School of Applied Science in 1910 with a B.S. degree and in 1914 he received the degree of Metallurgical Engineer from the same institution.

On graduation, Mr. Kuzell became associated with Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Great Falls, Montana, as Testing Engineer. In 1914 he was made Superintendent of Reverberatory Smelting at Anaconda where he remained until 1918. In that year he left Anaconda to become Smelter Superintendent, later General Superintendent, at United Verde Copper Co., Clarkdale, Arizona. When Phelps Dodge acquired the property in 1935, he became associated with its United Verde Branch of which he later became Manager. In 1944 he was transferred to Douglas as Director of Labor Relations and Consulting Metallurgist, later successively becoming ·Assistant General Manager, General Manager, and Vice-President in Charge of Western Activities for Phelps Dodge. Mr. Kuzell is also President, Apache Powder Co., Benson, Arizona.

Mr. Kuzell was elected to membership in the AIME in 1912 and is currently a member of the Board of Directors. He has contributed many valuable technical papers to Institute and other publications and has been granted many patents relating to reverberatory furnace construction and related items. He is nationally recognized as an authority not only on nonferrous metallurgy hut on labor relations and labor legislation.
