Sir Ian McLennan is Chairman and Director of Administration of The Broken Hill Proprietary Company, Limited, Australia's largest industrial enterprise.

Sir Ian studied Electrical Engineering at Melbourne University, was graduated in 1931 and joined The Broken Hill Company in 1933. He was given a series of administrative appointments and in 1950 he became General Manager of Broken Hill Proprietary. Following his appointment, the company began two decades of growth and development during which it grew to a corporation of international status. Sir Ian became Managing Director of BHP and the company's subsidiaries in 1967 and in 1971 he was named to his present position.

He currently holds the position of Chairman of the Defense (Industrial) Committee, which advises the Australian Federal Government on industrial and business aspects of Australian defense. He is a former President and the President-elect of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and he helped to form and was the original Chairman of the Australian Mineral Development Laboratories. In 1965 he served as the Deputy President of the Eighth Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress. His other activities include the Melbourne Scots, the Ian Clunies Ross Memorial Foundation, the Institute of Production Engineers of which he is a former President, the International Iron and Steel Institute of which he is a Director, the Australia-Japan Business Cooperation Committee and the Australian Mining Industry Council.

Sir Ian was knighted by the Queen in 1963 "For Services to Industry." He has also been awarded the Peter Nicol Russell Memorial Medal of the Institute of Engineers, Australia and he has been given two honorary degrees of Doctor of Engineering, from the University of Newcastle and the University of Melbourne.
