Michel Thomas Halbouty is an independent consulting geologist and petroleum engineer in Houston, and is recognized throughout the oil industry as one of the outstanding geologists and petroleum engineers in the United States.

He was graduated from Texas A&M University, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in 1930 and his Master of Science degree in 1931 from that institution in geology and petroleum engineering. In May of 1956 he received the Professional Degree in Geological Engineering from Texas A&M University, the first such degree to be conferred by the university. In June of 1966, the degree of Doctor of Engineering (honoris causa) was conferred upon him by the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology. He is currently active as an operator and producer in many oil and gas fields in America. Mr. Halbouty is a member of many world-wide scientific and engineering societies, and has contributed over 185 papers, as well as several books, to the literature of geology and petroleum engineering. One of his latest books, SaLt Domes, Gulf Region, United States and Mexico, is the only such single volume on this subject in the world's scientific literature.

Mr. Halbouty was a Distinguished Lecturer for the Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME during 1964 and 1965, and received the DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal in 1971. He has also been honored by the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, the Engineer's Council of Houston, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Houston Geological Society and the Wisdom Society for the Advancement of Knowledge, Learning and Research.
