Marshall B. Standing is a retired petroleum engineering consultant. For many years he was Professor of Petroleum Engineering at Stanford University. He received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Utah in 1936 and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1937 and 1941, respectively. In 1941 Dr. Standing joined the Standard Oil Company of California as a research engineer. He became head of the production research effort in 1943 and continued working in research until 1963. He was transferred to the corporate production staff of Standard Oil in 1963 where, until 1973, he was engineering consultant for reservoir engineering. During this time he formed and operated Standard Oil of California's in-house reservoir engineering schools. In 1973 he retired from Standard Oil to accept a Visiting Professorship of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Trondheim in Norway. After eighteen months at Trondheim, he joined the faculty of Stanford University.

Long active in SPE, Dr. Standing received the SPE Lester C. Uren Award in 1965, the Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal in 1977, and became an SPE Distinguished Member in 1983. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1984.
