Donald L. Katz is Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1933, Dr. Katz joined Phillips Petroleum Co., where he initiated a production research program and was one of the pioneers in developing the engineering discipline of reservoir engineering. Returning to the University in 1936, Dr. Katz has been on the faculty In the Chemical Engineering Dept. ever since. He has authored over 290 publications in the field of phase behavior, reservoir engineering, underground storage of gas, and heat transfer, and is best known for the Handbook of Natural Gas Engineering.

Dr. Katz is a member of many professional organizations including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. American Chemical Society, and the American Nuclear Society, and Is past President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. An active member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, he was chosen an SPE Distinguished Member in 1983. His numerous awards include the SPE John Franklin Carll Award, the AIME Mineral Industry Education Award, and the Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal. In 1983 he received the National Medal of Science from President Reagan, and in 1985 the Gas Processors Association initiated the Donald L. Katz Award for excellence in research and education.
