In recognition of his life-long commitment as an educator, researcher, and advocate for the steel industry. Thomas’s achievements in modeling the continuous casting process of steelmaking have paved the way for countless other researchers and students. By combining the results of his computational model calculations with laboratory experiments, metallographic analysis, and empirical measurements on production scale operations, Thomas has generated fundamental knowledge about the complexities of the continuous casting process, how defects form, and how quality can be improved. Through his unwavering commitment to education and technological advancement, he is a member of the highest caliber.

Dr. Brian G. Thomas is Director of the Continuous Casting Center and Research Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado.  He is also Gauthier Professor of Mechanical Engineering Emeritus and Research Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research efforts focus on computational modeling of continuous casting of steel and related processes.  Dr. Thomas is a Distinguished Member and Fellow of AIST, Fellow of ASM International, and Baosteel Honorary Professor. He has been recognized with the Presidential Young Investigator Award from NSF, Xerox Award from UIUC, Distinguished Scientist and Application to Practice Awards from TMS, Benjamin Fairless Award from AIST, HPC Innovation Award, and more than 15 best paper awards (from AFS, AIME, ISS, AIST, TMS, CIM, ASM International, and ASME).  He has co-authored over 450 papers and given over 250 presentations worldwide and co-instructed many short courses to industry, including the annual Brimacombe Continuous Casting Course.
