As an engineer, operating official and executive, Mr. Campbell has served the coal mining industry with distinction: his career with coal covers a span of 35 years. He has made tremendous contributions to the conversion of coal mining from a hand and animal industry to one in which machines and electric power win and transport the coal. Notable also are his contributions to safety in the industry through development of better methods of operation and the education of those employed in and about the mines. The welfare of employees and their families has loomed large in his planning as has means of selecting, encouraging, and training younger men for position of greater responsibility in the industry.
