For his contributions to mining engineering education and research, his international recognition in the development and application of innovative ground-control methodologies and his impact on improving safety in underground coal mines

Keith A. Heasley is professor emeritus in the Department of Mining Engineering at West Virginia University from which he retired in 2018 after 17 years of service. Prior to his appointment with WVU, he was employed by the former U.S. Bureau of Mines and then the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for 15 years.

Dr. Heasley graduated with a B.S. and M.S. in Mining Engineer from The Pennsylvania State University in 1981 and 1987, respectively. While working for the US Bureau of Mines, he completed his Doctorate in Mining Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 1998.

Since his undergraduate days, he has been an active member of SME, serving as Chair of the Coal & Energy Division, national board member, chair of the Central Appalachian Section, and board member of the Pittsburgh Section. Also, he has received the Coal & Energy Division Distinguished Service Award and the Syd S. Peng Ground Control in Mining Award
