Gary A. Pope (SPE)

AIME Environmental Stewardship Distinguished Service Award in 2008

"In recognition of outstanding service, foresight and innovation in groundwater modeling and remediation, oil recovery and greenhouse gas storage, including research leadership and education knowledge."

Professor Gary A. Pope is the Director of the Center for Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds the Texaco Centennial Chair in Petroleum Engineering, where he has taught since 1977. Previously he worked in production research at Shell Development Company for 5 years. Dr. Pope earned a Ph.D. from Rice University and a B.S. from Oklahoma State University, both in Chemical Engineering. His teaching and research are in the areas of geological storage of CO2, groundwater modeling and remediation, enhanced oil recovery, reservoir engineering, natural gas engineering and numerical reservoir simulation. He has authored or co-authored more than 210 technical papers on these topics and supervised the research of more than 120 graduate students at the University of Texas. Dr. Pope was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1999 for his contributions to understanding multiphase flow and transport in porous media and applications of these principles to aquifer remediation and improved oil recovery.
