David R. Maneval

David R. Maneval is the Assistant Director, Technical Services and Research Office of Surface Mining, U.S. Department of the Interior. Named to this position in 1978, he is responsible for technical services, research, training, and the Minerals Institute. He holds a B.S., an M.S. in chemistry, and a Ph.D. in mineral preparation from Pennsylvania State University, where he taught and did research in the Department of Mineral Preparation from 1953 to 1963.

In 1963, Dr. Maneval was appointed Director of Research and Development in the then Pennsylvania Department of Mines and Mineral Industries, and was later named Deputy Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources. In 1971, he joined the Appalachian Regional Commission, in Washington, D.C., as Science Advisor.

Dr. Maneval is the author of more than 70 technical papers stemming from his research work on coal preparation, coal chemistry, mine reclamation, mine subsidence, mine safety and air and water pollution abatement. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers, Sigma Xi Research Fraternity, Phi Lambda Upsilon Fraternity, and Sigma Gamma Epsilon Earth Sciences Fraternity.
