Dr. Qiulin Yu’s career in the steel industry spans over four decades of innovation, leadership, and technical achievement. Though initially interested in biology, a class trip to a heavy machinery plant and a 10,000-ton hydro press machine instilled in Dr. Yu a lifelong passion for metallurgy. This passion earned Dr. Yu a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering from China’s Yanshan University, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the University of Toledo in Ohio. From there, his career took off with significant roles at Nucor Steel and Huntco Steel, where he pioneered methods for converting CSP hot bands into cold-rolled products and introduced techniques like zonal roll cooling and direct quenching. Dr. Yu is a prolific author, award-winning engineer, and patent holder, but most importantly, he is a leader with years of experience leading teams with passion, respect, and understanding. Today, Dr. Yu is an active member of AIME and AISE and hosts seminars on exciting new steel technologies.
