Stanley Dempsey is Executive Chairman of Royal Gold, a leading publicly-traded precious metals royalty company headquartered in Denver, Colorado. The beginning of his career was spent with AMAX where he held various engineering, legal, operating and executive positions, including Chairman of AMAX Australia, Vice President of AMAX Inc., Senior Vice President of Climax Molybdenum Company, President of AMAX Iron Ore, Director of Environmental Affairs, and Division Attorney-Western Operations. As chief environmental officer of AMAX, he pioneered collaborative approaches to environmental conflicts arising out of mine development. His Experiment in Ecology program led to the successful development of the Henderson Mine in Colorado. For several years, Mr. Dempsey practiced law as a partner at Arnold & Porter. Mr. Dempsey is active in trade, professional, civic and environmental organizations. He is presently a director of the World Gold Council. He is a former chairman of the Colorado Mining Association, and past president of the Rocky Mountain Mineral Foundation. Mr. Dempsey received a degree in geology and a J.D. from the University of Colorado, and completed the Program for Management Development at the Harvard Business School. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree by the Colorado School of Mines in 2006. Mr. Dempsey is also an active student of mining history. He has written extensively on mining and environmental subjects and is the author of a history of mining towns in Summit County, Colorado. His book, Mining the Summit, was published by the University of Oklahoma.
