Louis Buchman (SME)

Born in Latvia in 1886, Louis Buchman came, in 1893, to Rapid River, Michigan where his father was established in the mercantile business. Mr. Buchman graduated from Michigan College of Mines in 1907 with the degrees of Bachelor of Science and Engineer of Mines. For several years thereafter he was engineer and surveyor at various mines in Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and Oregon. In 1914 he became associated with the Utah Copper Co. with which company and its successor, Kennecott Copper Corp., he was connected for nearly thirty-nine years. He was successively Assistant Mine Superintendent, Mine Superintendent, General Superintendent of Mines, and General Superintendent of all operations. In 1949 he was named General Manager of Kennecott's Western Mining Division. In 1952 he was elected Vice-President and Director of Kennecott, continuing to supervise all western mining divisions until his retirement in 1953. He is currently associated with Kennecott as a consultant.
In 1949 an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Engineering was conferred on Mr. Buchman by Michigan College of Mining and Technology.
Mr. Buchman has been a Member of AIME since 1938. He is also a Director of State of Utah Historical Society; Honorary Vice.President, Sons of Utah Pioneers; Director of First Security Corp., First Security Bank of Utah, Western Rock Bit Co., Bingham Gas & Oil Co., and KNAK Broadcasting Corp.
