Elmer Alonzo Jones

Elmer Alonzo Jones is chairman of the Lead-Zinc Producers Committee in Washington, D.C.
For 41 years, Mr. Jones had been with the St. Joseph Lead Company, Bonne Terre, Missouri, beginning as a mining engineer in 1926. After several promotions, he became division manager in 1953, a post he held until 1967. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees from 1963-1968, and concurrently served as Vice President and Board Member of Meramec Iron Mining Company (1958-1967).
While manager at St. Joseph Lead Company, Mr. Jones directed many innovations, including the first completely trackless mine in southeastern Missouri, the first drilling operation by large jumbo drills, the first rotary percussion drills on jumbos, transloaders loading and hauling, and the first application of chemical grout in shaft sinking. He also helped establish the Mine Research Department which conducted original studies on rock mechanics.
During 1967, 1968 and 1969, Mr. Jones was industry advisor and delegate to the United Nations Lead Zinc Study Group, Geneva, Switzerland.
He served as a director and a vice president of AIME and was the first president of the Society of Mining Engineers. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Mines and a recipient of the University's Outstanding Achievement Award.
