Larry Kaufman was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1931. He received the degrees of B.Met.E. from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1952 and Sc.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1955. During 1952 he was a metallurgist at American Electro Metals Corporation. From 1952 to 1955 he was a Research Assistant in the Department of Metallurgy.

He was a member of the research staff of M.I.T.'s Lincoln Laboratory from 1955 to 1958; simultaneously, during 195 7 and 1958, he taught advanced physical metallurgy at Northeastern University. Dr. Kaufman joined ManLabs, Inc., in 1958 as a senior metallurgist and was appointed Director of Research in 1963. His principal area of research has centered on the problem of quantitatively defining the thermodynamic stability of crystalline phases as a function of temperature, pressure and composition.
