John O. Marsden (SME)

For his many contributions in operations, research, process development, and service, John Marsden is a quintessential minerals industry professional. Importantly, also, he has been willing to share his knowledge and experience through publication and service to professional societies and to many boards.

John O. Marsden, P.E., is Senior Vice President of Technology and Product Development for Phelps Dodge Mining Company, a subsidiary of Phelps Dodge Corporation based in Phoenix, Arizona. In addition to managing technology and product development, he also has responsibility for the Climax Molybdenum Company. He received a B.Sc. Eng. (Hons) degree in Mineral Technology from the Royal School of Mines at the University of London. He has held various operations and technical management positions over the past fourteen years with Phelps Dodge Corporation at various locations in the USA, Chile, South Africa, Mexico and Botswana. Prior to working for Phelps Dodge, he spent nine years working for Consolidated Gold Fields PLC in various capacities in South Africa and the USA. John is an active member of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME), serving on the Mineral Processing Divisio's executive board, of which he is currently the Chair. He also serves on many other SME committees. He is on the Executive Board of AMIRA International. He is a registered professional engineer in Nevada. He has published widely on a broad range of metallurgical subjects related to copper and gold extraction technology.
