James E. Lawver

AIME Robert H. Richards Award* in
1980

"For his outstanding contributions to mineral processing, particularly in applications to phosphate and iron ores, which have advanced both the engineering and the theory of flotation, of electrostatic and magnetic separation, and of process control. The profession has been notably strengthened by his productive activities in research and development, reflected by the quantity and the quality of his publications and patents."

James E. Lawver is Technical Manager for International Minerals & Chemical Corporation - Florida Minerals Operations. He received his Met. E. in 1943, and his Sc.D. in 1956, both from the Colorado School of Mines, and has done post doctoral work at the Universities of Colorado, Michigan and Columbia.

Dr. Lawver began his career as a mining engineer in South America in 1943, first with Braden Copper Company in Chile, and then with the Bureau of Strategic Warfare in Brazil. In 1946, he joined International Minerals & Chemical as a research engineer and section leader, leaving to earn his doctorate. He returned to International in 1956 as manager of the mineral resources department. From 1962 to 1975, Dr. Lawver was Director, Mineral Resources Research Center and Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering at the University of Minnesota, returning to International Minerals & Chemical in 1975.

Dr. Lawver holds 33 patents from the U.S. and other countries, and is the author of four books and more than fifty articles and papers, many of which deal with beneficiation methods.
