Arthur W. Fahrenwald

1956

"In recognition of the increased understanding in theory and practice which has come from his studies and contributions, particularly in flotation, grinding, and classification, and which has contributed in large measure to advancement of the art of mineral beneficiation."

Arthur W. Fahrenwald was born in Yankton County, South Dakota, in 1890. In 1914 he received a B.S. in metallurgical engineering at South Dakota School of Mines and, in 1916, the professional degree Met.E., from the same institution. In that same year, he received an E.M. from New Mexico School of Mines where he was Professor of Mining and Metallurgy and Director and Coach of Athletics from 1915 to 1918. From 1920 to 1928, Mr. Fahrenwald was Ore Dressing Engineer with the U. S. Bureau of Mines, University of Idaho, and, in 19'34, became Professor and Head of the Department of Mining and Metallurgy. While he held this position Mr. Fahrenwald was also Director, Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology.

At various times, Mr. Fahrenwald has acted as consultant for such companies as International Nickel, Horne Copper, Cyprus Mines, Northwest Magnesite, Monsanto Chemical, U. S. Tin, and Manganese, Inc. He is the author of two books and some fifty technical publications and has taken out about thirty patents. New processes and new machines growing out of his research in flotation are now in use in mining districts throughout the world.

Mr. Fahrenwald's present position with the University of Idaho is Dean Emeritus and Research Professor of Mining and Metallurgy. He also owns a company in Spokane which manufactures machines for the mineral dressing laboratory.
