Douglas W. Fuerstenau (SME)

Douglas W. Fuerstenau is P. Malozemoff Professor of Mineral Engineering in the Dept. of Materials Science and Mineral Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, a Department which he chaired for eight years. He is also a member of the Board of Homestake Mining Company.
Dr. Fuerstenau received his B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1949, an M.S. from the Montana School of Mines in 1950, and an Sc.D. from M.I.T. in 1953. After three years as an assistant professor at M.I.T., he worked for Union Carbide and then Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. before joining the faculty of the University of California in 1959.
Dr. Fuerstenau is co-editor in-chief, International Journal of Mineral Processing, and is the American Scientific Member of the International Mineral Processing Congresses. He has published some 300 papers in various aspects of mineral processing.
A Distinguished Member of SME, Dr. Fuerstenau has served as Chairman of the Mineral Processing Division and on the Society's Board of Directors. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London. AIME has honored him with the Hardy Gold Medal, the Raymond Award, the Richards Award and the Gaudin Award. He has also been the recipient of a Humboldt Senior American Scientist Award from the Federal Republic of Germany.
