Allison Butts was born in Poughkeepsie, N. Y. in 1890. In 1911, he received an A.B. from Princeton and, in 1913, a B.S. from M.I.T. From 1913 to 1916, he was with the U. S, Metals Refining Co. Ile then joined the staff of Lehigh University, holding successive ranks from Instructor to Professor. He was Head of the Department of Metallurgy from 1952 to 1956 when he became Professor Emeritus of Metallurgy.

From 1916 to 1927, he was Assistant Editor and Associate Editor of The Mineral Industry. From 1938 to 1940, he was Investigator on the American Silver Producers' Research Project. From 1944 to 1946, he was Investigator and Technical Representative, National Defence Research Committee. After retirement from teaching in 1957, he went to Turkey in the service of UNESCO, where he organized research in the Institute of Materials and Processing at the Technical University of Istanbul.

A Member of AIME since 1917, Professor Butts was Chairman of the Lehigh Valley Section in 1932, Chairman of the Mineral Industry Education Division (now Council of Education) and Director of AIME from 1950 to 1952. In 1955 be received the Stoughton Award of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of ASM.
