AIME Mineral Economics Award in
1978

For outstanding professional accomplishment in his government, industry, and university teaching careers and for leadership in all aspects of the objectives of the Council of Economics, AIME.

Vogely received a bachelor's degree from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, and a doctoral degree from Princeton University in Princeton, N.J. From 1974 to 1991, he was professor of mineral economics at Penn State, serving as chairman of the department from 1975 through 1988.

Before coming to Penn State, he worked for the Internal Revenue Service, the Interior Department and the Bureau of Land Management. In addition, from 1971 through 1973 he was director of the Office of Economic Analysis and in 1974 he served as acting deputy assistant secretary of energy and minerals with the Interior Department.

He was the author of many books and publications and received many awards.  William Arthur Vogely, professor emeritus of mineral economics and a Phi Beta Kappa, died Oct. 31, 1999 at the age of 75.
