Robert W. Bouman (AIST)

AIME J.E. Johnson, Jr. Award in
1974

For his demonstrated ability to combine the theoretical and practical approaches to blast furnace operation which has resulted in significant improvements in furnace control and productivity.

Mr. Robert W. Bouman is Section Manager, Ironmaking, in the Research Department of Bethlehem Steel Corporation. Mr. Bouman received his M.S. degree in mining engineering from Ohio State University in 1961 and pursued graduate studies in metallurgical and chemical engineering at Lehigh University, from 1965-1969.

In 1961, he joined Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company as Research Engineer working in the production and utilization of raw materials in steel plants, including experience in blast furnace and sintering processes. In 1964, he joined Bethlehem Steel Corporation as an engineer in the Research Department, developing thermochemical relationships and analyzing operating data for iron blast furnaces. He was active in developing control systems and was responsible for the improving of blast furnace and sintering operations, and in developing new metallurgical processes. Mr. Bouman is a member of American Iron and Steel Institute and Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association.
