M.O. Holowaty was born in West Ukraine in 1922, when that country was under Polish occupation. In 1940 he entered the University of Breslau from which he graduated in 1943 as Research Chemist with a degree of M.S. One year later he e received a Ph.D. degree. Three weeks after his final examination, Breslau became the scene of military action and Dr. Holowaty escaped just ahead of the oncoming Reds. He then settled in Heidelberg where he was appointed Science Associate in the Chemical Physiological Institute of the University of Heidelberg, remaining there until 1948. Simultaneously, he served as liaison officer at the U. S. Military Government Headquarters in the same city.

With his family, Dr. Holowaty came to the United States in January 1949. Until May 1951, he lived in Marquette, Mich., and was employed in the Research Laboratory of the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Co. He then joined the Inland Steel Co. as Metallurgist in the Research and Development Department. He is currently with the same company as Head of Raw Materials Research at the Research Laboratories in East Chicago, Indiana. Dr. Holowaty was elected to membership in AIME in 1953.
