Merle H. Schmidt (AIST)

For his contributions generally in furthering blast furnace operating performance, but especially for his pioneering measurement work in rapid slag basicity, nuclear coke moisture determination, continuous hot metal temperature.

Merle H. Schmidt received his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Princeton University in 1951. The same year he joined the Blast Furnace Department at Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Johnstown, Pa. plant. He's been with the firm since.

Mr. Schmidt is currently superintendent of the Johnstown Blast Furnace Department, a post he's held since 1962. He formerly held the positions of assistant superintendent (1960), general furnace foreman (1957) and turn foreman (1956). The years 1954 to 1956 were spent in service with the U.S. Army.
