Dr. Jessica Elzea Kogel is the Associate Director for Mining at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health where she leads NIOSH’s Mining Research Program through the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research, the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) and the Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD). Before joining NIOSH Dr. Kogel spent 25-years in the mining industry where she held positions in research and development and mining operations management for companies in the industrial minerals sector. Dr. Kogel has served on the editorial board of several international journals, is the author of numerous peer-reviewed articles in minerals research and holds four patents in the field of industrial minerals processing. She was Senior Editor for the 7th Edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks. She is a Distinguished Member of SME and served as President of SME in 2013 and President of the Clay Minerals Society in 2003.
