George A. Mealey (SME)

George A Mealey is president and chief operating officer and a director of Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold.
He earned a B.S. in mining engineering in 1956 at the Montana School of Mines and his M.B.A. in management at the College of Notre Dame in 1975. He began his career in the Moab Utah Uranium District with Hecla Mining Company. He later joined the American Gilsonite Company, where he gained mining engineering experience with one of the first long-distance slurry pipelines and in the hydraulic mining of gilsonite. He went to Chile in 1963 with Braden Copper Company, then joined Freeport Minerals in 1975. By 1988, he advanced to his current position of the company.
He is a member of the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum, the American Mining Congress, and the Montana Tech Foundation.
