For his contributions to the ironmaking industry spanning more than four decades. Cameron is recognized as a global authority on ironmaking technologies and practices and is co-author of Blast Furnace Ironmaking: Analysis, Control and Optimization, one of the most comprehensive modern publications dedicated to the art and science of ironmaking. An avid teacher and mentor to the next generation of ironmaking technologists, Cameron passionately serves AIST’s mission to advance technology for iron, steel, and ferrous metallurgy

Ian Cameron leads Hatch’s global ironmaking technology team. He has extensive experience in process technology, plant operations, technology transfer, commissioning, and training in both the iron and steel and nickel industries. His experience includes coke plant, pellet plant, and blast furnace design and operations; assessing steel works energy balances; and the implementation of future iron- and cokemaking technologies. He has evaluated future raw material usage patterns for major global mining companies, developed blast furnace operational strategies, solved acute operational problems, and implemented leading technical and business practices. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in metallurgical engineering from McGill University and is a Professional Engineer in Ontario. Cameron is a co-author of Blast Furnace Ironmaking, Analysis, Control and Optimization. He is a Life Member of AIST and a four-time winner of the Josef S. Kapitan Award — three times for Ironmaking and once for Cokemaking. In addition, Cameron was the 2022 recipient of the AIST Thomas L. Joseph Award.
