Volunteers from SME's Washington DC section, the U S Geological Survey, Northern Virginia Gem and Mineral Club, and the American Coal Foundation partnered for the 6th year to provide outreach to pre-K through middle school students, their parents, and educators at the DiscoverE's Family Day in the National Building Museum. The event, with interactive activities from 30+ organizations, draws up to 8,000 attendees. Students "mined" for minerals in birdseed, identified them, and learned about their uses. They walked away with a small prize and more information and activities to do at home.
