Volunteers from SME's Washington DC section and staff from National Mining Association, American Coal Foundation, and AIME partnered for the 5th year to provide outreach to about 500 students and their parents at the DiscoverE's Family Day. The event with interactive activities from 30 organizations draws up to 8,000 mainly pre-K through middle school students and their parents each year to the National Building Museum. Students "mined" for minerals in birdseed and then identified them and learned about their uses. They walked away with a small prize, coal samples, and more activities to do at home.
