3. New Faces of Engineering Professional Winner Highlight.
|
In 2003 the National Engineers Week Foundation began what has become an annual tradition of asking its members to nominate colleagues 30 years old or younger for consideration as one of the New Faces of Engineering. Now in its tenth year, this prestigious award is recognized by the engineering community as a top honor for young engineers. In 2012, this tradition of recognizing engineering excellence continued with a stellar class that included young professionals in energy, healthcare, the environment, infrastructure, water treatment and conservation and other fields.
One of the 2012 New Faces of Engineering professional winners is Bridget Schuh. Nominated by the American Society of Civil Engineers, Bridget, 29, is a civil engineer who specializes in storm water management. She is a strong advocate of reaching out to future engineers. Through numerous classroom visits, competitions, and community service activities, she has inspired many who may not otherwise have known about civil engineering or engineering in general.

4. DiscoverE Educator Award Winner Spotlight.
|
The DiscoverE Educator Awards spotlight educators who are inspiring tomorrow’s innovation generation in the classroom. At the DiscoverE Summit on February 22, 2012, held at the Newseum in Washington DC, the engineering profession honored educators who are helping students discover engineering. This year’s winners and their nominating engineers illustrate all that’s right in America’s classroom today. Javaris Powell is one of those winners.
A middle school engineering teacher for 11 years, Javaris Powell teaches engineering to 6-8th graders and actively participates in several engineering-related programs, including FIRST Lego League, G.E.T. S.E.T. Summer Math Academy, and the Spark Club Afterschool Engineering Club. In 2008, Javaris won the Chairman’s Choice Award for successfully advancing 58 of his 60 students at least two grade levels in mathematics. Javaris believes that the majority of his students only consider careers in sports or entertainment, so he works hard to show them that engineering is an interdisciplinary smorgasbord for learning. Now he is challenging his students to consider a new dream: engineering.
