Julius J. Harwood is director, Materials Sciences Laboratory, Engineering and Research Staff, Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan. He was associated with the Office of Naval Research as head of its Metallurgy Branch from 1946 to 1960. During that time he was on special assignment to the Advanced Research Projects Agency, Department of Defense, to help develop the Agency's Interdisciplinary Materials Sciences University Laboratory Program. Since joining Ford in 1960, Mr. Harwood has held positions as manager of the Metallurgy Department; assistant director, Materials Sciences; manager, Research Planning; and director of Physical Sciences until April 1975, when he assumed his present position. Mr. Harwood holds a B.S. degree from the College of the City of New York and an M.S. degree from the University of Maryland. He has published over seventy articles in the fields of corrosion, high temperature materials, materials resources, new materials development and the management and planning of industrial research. The 1973 president of The Metallurgical Society of AIME, Mr. Harwood is also a past chairman of the Society's Institute of Metals Division. He has served on the board of directors of the Institute since 1972. He is a Fellow of The Metallurgical Society of AIME and a Fellow of the American Society for Metals. Mr. Harwood is a member and 1976 chairman of the Board of Control, Michigan Technological University. He has served on many government committees, participated in numerous government studies and is currently a member of the Materials Advisory Committee to the Office of Technology Assessment of the U.S. Congress.
