Howard I. Young
Howard I. Young was born in Jasper County, Missouri, in 1889. Honorary degrees of Doctor of Engineering were conferred on him by Missouri School of Mines in 1939, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1958. In 1952, Lindenwood College granted him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. After working for two years with the Carthage Foundry Co., lie joined the American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. in 1908 as bookkeeper. In 1910, he became Office Manager. After four years, he rose in rapid succession from Manager of all Missouri Mines, Manager of all company mining operations, VicePresident in Charge of Operations, to President and General Manager, his present title which he has held since 1930. A Member of AIME since 1915, he served on its Board of Directors from 1950 to 1952 and was General Chairman of its Annual Meeting held in St. Louis in 1951. From Mining World, he received the award as "Man of American Mining for 1958." In May, 1959, the St. Louis Advertising Club named him "Man of the Month." Unfortunately, space does not permit the listing of the many directorships and presidencies held over the years by Dr. Young, hut they are indications of his wide and valued experience. He served on the War Production Board as Director of Minerals Bureau and Director of Minerals Resources Coordinating Division in 1943. He was Deputy Vice-Chairman for Metals and Minerals in 1944; Deputy Administrator of Defense Materials Procurement Agency from September 1951 to May 1953.
