Lloyd Edwin Elkins was born near Golden, Colorado, in 1912. He received a Professional Degree in Petroleum Engineering from Colorado School of Mines in 1934 and attended the Harvard Graduate School of BusIness Administration in the 14th Session of Advanced Management Program in the Fall of 1948.

Immediately after graduation from Colorado School of Mines, Mr. Elkins joined the Pan American Petroleum Corporation. He began his career as Roustabout and progressed steadily forward as Apprentice Engineer, Field Engineer, Junior Engineer, Senior Petroleum Engineer, Petroleum Engineering Supervisor, Assistant Chief Production Engineer, Chief Production Engineer, Chief Engineer (Producing Department), until he attained his present post as Director of Production Research.

Mr. Elkins has been active in AIME in many important positions since 1945, having served as Chairman, Mid-Continent Local Section; Vice-Chairman of AIME Petroleum Division; Chairman, AIME Petroleum Branch; and AIME Director and Vice-President. During 1960, he headed the AIME Member Gift Campaign so successfully that the quota was attained during bis term in office.

In addition to bis professional activities, Mr. Elkins has devoted a great deal of his time and efforts to Tulsa church and civic affairs, covering a wide range of interests, such as Tulsa Council of Churches, Family and Children's Service, Tulsa Council of Social Agencies, Community Chest, Baseball-Softball Commission, United Nations Tulsa Study Group, and the Tulsa City-County Library Commission. Several of these entailed appointment by the Mayor of Tulsa.

Mr. Elkins has held several offices in the American Petroleum Institute and wrote two chapters for "History of Petroleum Engineering." He is the author of many articles in the petroleum field that have been published in national magazines. As late as October, 1961, a paper presented by him at the meeting of Engineers' Council for Professional Development in Louisville, Kentucky, on the subject, "Where Does Professional Specialization

Belong in the Engineering Curricula in Relation to Industry Needs?" was widely recognized.

Among the honors accorded him are: API Citation for Service and Certificate of Appreciation; Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME, Certificate of Service; University of Tulsa, Citizens Award; Colorado School of Mines, Distinguished Achievement Medal; Oklahoma State University, Engineers Hall of Fame.

AIME is proud to welcome Lloyd E. Elkins as its President for 1962.
