Jan D. Miller (SME)

AIME Mineral Industry Education Award in
1997

"In recognition of his outstanding achievements and dedication as a teacher and mentor of students, his brilliant seminars, innovative research and illuminating papers in the field of mineral processing."

Jan D. Miller received his BS with distinction from the Pennsylvania State University and his MS and PhD in metallurgical engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. Dr. Miller joined the Metallurgical and Metallurgical Engineering faculty at the University of Utah and currently holds the rank of professor. He has taught numerous undergraduate courses, served as faculty sponsor for the SME Student Chapter, and supervised more than 70 graduate students. He has received the Departmental Teaching Excellence Award on three occasions and is well known for his numerous technical contributions in the areas of surface chemistry, coal preparation, mineral processing, hydrometallurgy, and environmental technology, with more than 200 publications.

Professor Miller is a member of the American Chemical Society, Fine Particle Society, The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS), and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME). He has served on the SME Board of Directors and is a past chairman of the Mineral Processing Division of SME. He is the recipient of numerous professional society awards by both SME and TMS, and the AIME Robert H. Richards Award and A.M. Gaudin Award. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
