Charles J. Potter (SME)

Charles J. Potter has been Chairman of the Board of the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company of Indiana, Pennsylvania since 1970. He received his Bachelor's Degree in 1929 and his Master's Degree in 1930 from the School of Mines of the University of Missouri at Rolla. In 1932 he received his Ph.D. degree from West Virginia University and was awarded as Honorary Doctor of Engineering Degree by the University of Missouri in 1950.
Dr. Potter began his career with the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company in 1940. On leave of absence from the company during World War II, he was Deputy Coal Mines and Deputy Solid Fuels Administrator in the United States Department of the Interior. Following those services, he was awarded the Medal for Merit by President Truman and was made an Honorary Commander, Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen. He has continuously served as an advisor to and a member of various governmental committees.
Dr. Potter has been a member of AIME since 1941.
