James D. Reilly retired in 1970 as vice president of Consolidation Coal Co. He is a mining consultant in St. Clairsville, Ohio, and chairman of the board of St. Clair Oil Co., and Pike Natural Gas Co.

Mr. Reilly started as a miner for the Walter Bledsoe Co. in 1923, advancing to mine superintendent in 1938. During this period he was very active in mine safety and mine rescue work. He became mine superintendent of the Piney Fork Mine of Hanna Coal Co. in 1942, president of the Hanna Coal Division of Consolidation Coal Company in 1961, and vice-president of Consolidation Coal Company in 1967, a position he held until retirement in 1970.

Since joining AIME in 1947, James Reilly has been active in various phases of the Institute and the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME. He served as chairman of the Society's Coal Division in 1966, and president of the Society in 1971. He was a member of the AIME board of directors from 1969 through 1972, has served on a number of AIME committees, and was chairman of the Erskine Ramsay Medal Award Committee in 1971.

From 1952 through 1956, Mr. Reilly worked as a consultant to the French Coal and Iron Mines, and for this received the Chevalier French Legion of Honor. He has served as president of the Ohio Coal Association and chairman of the Surface Mining Committee of the American Mining Congress.
