Thomas J. Usher is chair of the board and chief executive officer of USX Corporation.

He earned his B.S. in industrial engineering, an M.S. in operations research, and a Ph.D. in systems engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He began his career with U.S. Steel in 1966 and held a variety of positions in the industrial engineering department until transferring to the firm's South (Chicago) Works. He became director of corporate strategic planning in 1979, assistant to the president in 1981, and managing director-facility planning, engineering, research, and industrial engineering for the resource development group. He continued to move up through positions and was elected president of the U.S. Steel Group and to the USX board of directors in 1991 and to his current post in 1995.
