James P. Brill (SPE)

For his research on multi-phase flow in pipes, his service on ABET and his preparation of many young engineers.

James P. Brill joined the petroleum engineering faculty at the University of Tulsa in 1966. He resigned his faculty position in 2000 and now serves as a consultant to research projects and the Decision Review Board for Chevron’s Tulsa University Center of Research Excellence. Brill served as a consultant to many oil and gas companies on multiphase flow in pipes and taught related short courses. He is the author of more than 100 publications and is coauthor of the SPE Monograph Multiphase Flow in Wells.

Brill represented SPE on the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology during 1989–2000. He has received the SPE Production Engineering Award, Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Engineering Faculty, the John Franklin Carll Distinguished Professional Award, is an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Fellow, and has been inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame and the US National Academy of Engineering. Brill earned a BS degree in engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1962 and a PhD degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1966.
