Irl F. Engelhardt is chairman and chief executive officer of Peabody Holding Company, a position he has held since 1990. Mr. Engelhardt joined the Peabody Group of companies in 1979 after a decade of management consulting experience. He is a former chairman of Cornerstone Construction & Materials, Inc. and Suburban Propane Company as well as former chairman of the National Coal Association and of the National Mining Association; and former director and group vice president of Hanson Industries.

Mr. Engelhardt has a BS from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and an MBA from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Mr. Engelhardt's many activities include chairman and special committee member, Coal Industry Advisory Board to the International Energy Agency; chairman, Center for Energy and Economic Development; board of directors, National Mining Association. He is also on the board of directors and is chairman of the environmental Committee of the National Association of Manufacturers.
