Herbert R. Hanley

AIME Mineral Industry Education Award in

"Venerable and respected metallurgical engineer and educator whose career has spanned many generations and whose enthusiasm for his profession and AIME has never diminished."

Herbert R. Hanley is professor of metallurgy at the Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Missouri. He received his BS degree from the Missouri School of Mines in 1901.

From 1903 to 1916 he was superintendent of the Copper Smelter and Mines for the Bully Hill Copper Mining and Smelting Co. in California. He held the position of development and superintendent process and plant production manager at the Electrolytic Zinc and Cadmium Plant of U.S. Smelting, Refining and Mining Co. in California from 1916 to 1920.

He then moved to the Missouri School of Mines, and was appointed associate professor in 1923 and professor in 1926. Hanley has served as consultant to many metal companies, authored more than 40 publications in the general field of metallurgy, and has been a member of AIME for 64 years. He is also a member of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, the Electrochemical Society, and the American Electroplaters Society.
