Harry Harrison Power (SPE)

AIME Mineral Industry Education Award in
1964

"Distinguished petroleum engineer, educator and author whose pioneering work was preeminent in achieving recognition of petroleum engineering curricula by industry and engineering education."

Professor Emeritus Harry H. Power of The University of Texas received his education in chemical and petroleum engineering at Washington State University, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of California. His professional experience includes employment with Cities Service Co. as a junior engineer, Gulf Oil Corporation as Production Engineer and Chief Production Engineer, and The University of Texas, where he became Professor of Petroleum Engineering in 1936, serving for twenty years as Chairman of the Department. He also served as graduate professor and on various committees, including the University Administrative Council.

With the AIME, he has served as Chairman of the Mid-Continent Section and Chairman of the Petroleum Division (now Society of Petroleum Engineers of AIME), Chairman of the Educational Section of the Petroleum Division, Chairman of the MIED Educational Division, a member of the Lucas Gold Medal Award Committee and the Board of Directors. Professor Power also served as Chairman of the Mineral Education Division of ASEE, the Committee on Production Technology, and the Central Committee on Drilling and Production Practice of the American Petroleum Institute, the Committee on Petroleum Sciences of the Southern Regional Education Board, and the Texas Conference for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Teaching. He also served for many years as a member of the Engineering School Examining Committee for Engineers' Council for Professional Development.

His foreign assignments include Fulbright professorships at Delft Technological University, Holland, and the University of Cairo, Egypt. He has also served as a consultant to industry and government both at home and abroad. He has written extensively for the technical publications of AIME and the oil industry, and is a member of various honorary societies.
