Case Studies: Challenges & Successful Business Models

This panel was focused on bringing concepts of the circular economy to practical levels of implementation. Three speakers from the Petroleum, Mining and Chemicals / Plastics industries shared experiences on their journeys to sustainability. Jill Cooper from Anadarko Petroleum outlined how they have been decreasing their footprint and are focused on turning “wastes” into products, with produced water as an example. She also outlined their proactive stakeholder engagement program empowering certain employees to engage with the communities where they reside. Bob Bassett of Holland and Hart reviewed a best practice agreement for mine development in a sustainable manner as supported by the World Bank. He also discussed how raw materials might be “leased” for use / reuse. Rick Wagner from ChevronPhillips Chemical Company outlined the key phases on their journey to sustainability with CEO support and encouragement as a key facilitator. Discussion following the presentations touched on improved policy and regulations which encourage recycling and reuse, including joint initiatives with regulators, such as the US EPA.
